If you complete the nuclear medicine program, for example, there are a variety of specializations that may appeal to you, such as medical assisting, radiology, or occupational rehabilitation. Nuclear medicine technologists prepare radioactive drugs and administer them to patients. The radioactive dye cause abnormal areas of the body to appear stand out from unaffected areas in the images. An associate's degree is the minimum requirement for radiologic and MRI technologists. In addition, you may pursue a graduate certificate or bachelors degree. Training programs include both classroom study and clinical work. Courses may include anatomy, pathology, patient care, radiation physics, and image evaluation.

The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) accredits programs in radiography. To become licensed, technologists must graduate from an accredited program, and pass a certifying exam. Certifications for radiologic technologists are available from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Certifications for MRI technologists are available from the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT). The average salary for radiation therapists was $70,220 in May 2015, as reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Further, job openings for nuclear medicine technologists are projected to grow 15% over the next decade.

Dental Assistant Programs

In dentistry, there are three fast-growing employment fields. Dental assistants perform many tasks, ranging from providing patient care, to record-keeping and scheduling appointments. Dental lab technicians construct, or repair, dentures and prosthetics. Dental hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and apply sealants and fluorides to help protect teeth. They must also learn to take and develop dental x-rays. The median annual wage for dental hygienists was $52,330 in 2015, while dental assistants average $37,500 per year. Employment of dental assistants and hygienists is projected to grow 19% in the coming decade.

Dental hygienists need an associates degree in dental hygiene. The programs typically take 3 years to complete, and offer laboratory, clinical, and classes in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, radiography, pathology, and periodontics. All states require dental hygienists to be licensed, although requirements vary by state. The Commission on Dental Accreditation, part of the American Dental Association, has accredited more than 300 dental hygiene programs.
